Frequently Asked Questions

What hardware do I need to use CrystalRoom?
CrystalRoom is built exclusively for Apple Vision Pro running visionOS. It is not available on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You need an Apple Vision Pro headset to use the app.
What is Immersive Space mode?
Immersive Space mode uses Apple Vision Pro's spatial computing capabilities to place your crystal structure in your physical environment at room scale. You can literally walk around a unit cell. Enable it from the toolbar inside the app. You can exit back to windowed mode at any time.
How do I measure bond distances and angles?
Tap any atom in the structure to select it, then tap a second atom. CrystalRoom will display the bond distance between them. For angles, select three atoms in sequence — the angle at the middle atom is calculated automatically.
What is a supercell and how do I expand it?
A supercell is a repeating tile of the unit cell — expanding from 1×1×1 to larger grids lets you see the full periodic lattice and how structures propagate through space. Use the expansion slider in the toolbar to go up to 5×5×5. Note that very large supercells (5×5×5) may be computationally intensive depending on the structure.
What is CIF Import and how do I use it?
CIF (Crystallographic Information File) is the universal standard for sharing crystal structure data. CIF Import allows you to load any valid CIF file into CrystalRoom from Files, email attachments, or any other source that appears in the visionOS share sheet. CIF files are freely available from databases like the Crystallography Open Database, ICSD, and the Cambridge Structural Database. CIF Import is available through institutional licensing — if you're at a university, research lab, or educational program interested in deploying CrystalRoom with CIF Import, contact us at support_crystalroom@kridallc.com.
My CIF file won't load. What should I check?
CrystalRoom supports standard CIF format (both CIF1 and mmCIF). If your file fails to import, check that: (1) it's a valid CIF file and not a compressed archive; (2) it contains the required _atom_site fields; (3) the file isn't corrupted. If you continue having issues, send the file to support_crystalroom@kridallc.com and we'll investigate.
How do I use Auto-Spin for a presentation or demo?
Auto-Spin continuously rotates the structure at a gentle pace — ideal for demonstrations, lectures, or leaving a structure on display. Enable it from the toolbar. You can still zoom and adjust the supercell size while auto-spin is active.
How do I request a refund?
All purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com or contact Apple Support — we do not have access to your payment information.
Where do the built-in crystal structures come from?
The six built-in structures (Diamond, Gold, NaCl, Perovskite, Quartz, and Rutile) are based on well-established crystallographic data and are bundled directly with the app. No internet connection is required to view them.
